As someone who grew up in a single parent home, I knew early on that working through college was going to be in the plan. Fast forward to 2019, and I am now balancing what can be called a full-time job while also being a full-time student. And since according to The Atlantic, up to a quarter of college students are also in the same boat, I figured I share how I balance my work and school life. Lunch time Is For Eating AND Studying!!I think everyone has the “study before class” trick down pact. And if you're a current procrastinator (or reformed like me), then you've perfected it to an art. However most people don't study during lunch; whether it's the food, the friends, or simply because you finally have a break during classes, it doesn't happen. And while lunch seems like the perfect time to beige watch Shane Dawson's Conspiracies series, it's also a really great time to study for that test. Or take that online test. Personally I use lunch to read any and all material for my classes. As I know that my access and time frame to use the internet is limited. Why push off doing you're assigned reading now, when that may cause you to have less time to actually write the paper later? \ Also lunch time is probably the best time to hold any and all study groups. Typically study sessions are held after school, but with a work schedule spending three hours to study for Chem is not always possible or practical. So I'd recommend using the lunch time you may share with classmates as a way to get some study group time in! Why push off doing you're assigned reading now, when that may cause you to have less time to actually write the paper later? Break Time Is Your Time.True story, I brought my English homework to work and during my break worked on it upstairs. Yes, while I couldn't get deep into annotations or editing an essay, I could still knock out a few chapters. Making me 100% prepared for the discussion our class had the following day! So find out if your boss is okay with you working on your school work in your down time at work. As long as it doesn't interfere with your productivity, they shouldn't have a problem with it. Just make sure to set a timer so you don't forget to clock back in! Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
Relax!! (It's Okay)Although I am a reformed procrastinator, even in my dark days I had a thing about knowing dates. I needed to know the; due dates, assigned dates, check in dates, etc, etc, etc, dates, dates, dates! However college is not rocking with my date obsessive style. Actually I have a Professor (well call him “K”) who has not given me a due date to an essay and I think I'm breaking out because of it. But it only shows that college sometimes doesn't fit into your planner, time table, or plan. And honestly you have to just roll with it, but smartly. Reassess, adapt, and work with or around it. Sometimes you have to just take a deep breath (remember to exhale) and relax. So I hoped this helped some of my employed students out there! And maybe even just the students who are trying to balance sports with school, or family with school, it all applies a little! Leave a comment below if you have any trick of trade I can use to help balance work with school. And as always, thank you for reading!
Love, Sydney
